Kalimuendo Scores as Forest Secure Nostalgic Win Over Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” echoed through the stadium as Nottingham Forest supporters celebrated another success against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has happened since Francis's winning header clinched the continental trophy back in the year 1979, but the club continue to treasure those glorious moments. Similarly, significant shifts have occurred in the five weeks since the manager assumed control, with the team looking refreshed and earning a convincing win thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the European competition.

Gaining Momentum with Third Consecutive Victory

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third straight triumph across every tournament and further built on the momentum generated from the previous week's stunning victory at Anfield. While this match was a reminder of the club's historic triumph in spirit, the game itself was free of any significant tension or nerves.

This was an event filled with sentiment, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the European Cup final over four decades past.

Forest fully embraced the history, honoring the legends of that era by providing them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from that time were also in attendance. Both teams shared a meal together prior to the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates received a rousing welcome when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically impressive display was shown in the Trent End.

Remembering History

“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read one part of a giant tifo, in capital letters. While no one needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was unfurled as the players came out from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second stunning tifo showed Brian Clough watching proceedings beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.

Control from the Outset

So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was pretty good, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward fired an attempt wide inside two minutes and built a two-goal lead by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.

It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who joined the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence led by their own academy product captain, Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The home defender Milenkovic saw a delivery cannon off a defender and into the path of Yates, who swept home right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his first goal since March.

Second Strike Confirms Dominance

Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the brink of the interval, as well, his free header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to convert the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and just his second outing since September, was the spark, lofting a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.

A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned wide off the back Colin Rösler, son of former Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free Milenkovic had previously had a powerful header smartly saved by the keeper, who returned in place of the former Aston Villa goalie Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league ended on 9 November, and they found it hard to equal the home team's energy. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a set-piece. Yates had a shot blocked, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

The home side then went for the jugular, with the winger chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an ambitious effort wide from distance. It was one of those evenings. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, made multiple alterations from the side that surprised Liverpool at their ground recently, when they also scored three times, though he introduced substitutes and further fresh legs during the second half.

Smooth Night for the Team

It proved a flawless night for Forest. The coach could take off the defender with the match long since sewn up and subsequently introduced 19-year-old full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of producing of excitement, as well.
